There are two big political parties in Spain: PP and PSOE. I will misuse some concepts from the USA politics, so you can have nothing really clear.
40% PP is considered a conservative party. A strong feeling of the unity of Spain, a strong catholic component, and a light influence from libertarian points of view. They are seen as friends of the USA and the UK, friends of free markets and defenders of traditions. It has nothing to do with republicans, but sort of.
40% PSOE is considered to be liberal. They see Spain more as a confederal country, usually considered more alligned with Europe and intervention in markets. They are usually seen as more worried about climate change, getting the money from the rich and giving it to the poor. Nothing to do with democrats, but sort of. Most of them saw Kerrys defeat as own. wanted Kerry to win in the USA.
20% Other parties: communists, and separatists parties. Some political parties linked to Autonomous Regions believe that the autonomy of their Autonomous Regions is not enough.
Currently, PSOE rules since 2004.
